Trends and hashtags can raise awareness, but education and difficult conversations can really move the needle from injustice and racism to understanding and equity. Michigan student-athletes, including alum and current master’s student Briana Nelson, formed a student organization to move us forward to change.
This spring, the school graduated its first cohort from the online MPH program. The graduates came into the program from a variety of backgrounds. Many of them balanced full-time jobs—including as frontline health care workers—with their course load.
The School of Public Health has been ranked the fourth-best school of public health in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. This year’s rankings included 188 public health schools and programs.
Generosity can make all the difference. In a year of unprecedented challenges, Michigan Public Health saw a significant increase in the number of smaller donations made to the school. Many of those gifts went to supporting students experiencing critical needs due to the pandemic.
As alum and public health professor Rohan Jeremiah knows well, public health does its best work when it remembers the inherent strengths and unique qualities of the communities it seeks to serve. This means paying close attention to local cultures and thinking creatively about ways to turn challenges into opportunities.
Since grade school, Dolly Katz had planned to be a reporter. The Michigan alum worked for years as a Detroit journalist before changing paths. She is now a disease expert at the CDC working to eradicate tuberculosis. Katz’s investigative skills have served her well as both a journalist and an epidemiologist.
