What do you look for in applicants to Michigan Public Health?
- Overall we are looking for students who are well rounded in academic and extracurricular activities, are engaged in their communities, demonstrate leadership skills, and have strong writing and communication skills. We look for students who will pursue a range of career and educational options across multiple disciplines.
Was there a change to the prerequisite courses?
- Yes, during the 2019-2020 academic year, all curriculum in the School of Public Health was reviewed by the nationally-recognized accrediting body, the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). This was part of a regular re-accreditation process that takes place every 7 years. Based on the recommendations from CEPH, the prerequisite courses were revised to ensure all students are introduced to the foundations of scientific knowledge through biological or life sciences coursework.
- Now, instead of three credits in natural sciences, applicants must complete a minimum of three credits in life sciences. More information on this requirement can be found on the cross-campus transfer and external transfer admissions pages.
I've completed the prerequisite courses, what else should I take?
- Competitive applicants will have completed a diverse array of coursework. Admitted students commonly complete coursework in: anthropology, biology, earth and environmental sciences, economics, history, psychology, sociology, or women's and gender studies.
Do I have to complete the required classes by the time of my application?
- The prerequisite courses must be completed before beginning the program in fall term. However, applicants who complete all required coursework before application review begins (February of each year) will be most competitive for admission.
- Applications from students attending institutions that do not offer equivalents of PUBHLTH 200 and STATS 250 will be given full consideration. If admitted the student will have the opportunity to take these courses in their first semester at Michigan Public Health.
I am a prospective freshman (current high school senior) interested in applying to the program, can I apply now?
- No, the program is designed for upper-level students. Prospective students apply during their sophomore year, and admitted students complete their degree in the School of Public Health during their junior and senior years.
- If you plan to apply to the University of Michigan now, you can apply to any college or school that would provide you with exposure to a breadth of coursework, including the courses which fulfill the prerequisites would be appropriate.
Can I pursue a dual degree?
Yes, as of November 2020 students in the undergraduate public health program may pursue a dual degree with the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Visit the dual degree page for more information.
Can I pursue a minor?
Yes, undergraduate public health students may pursue a minor in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA), College of Engineering, the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, the School of Art and Design, the School of Education, the School of Information, the School of Music, Theatre and Dance, and the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. They may also elect a minor in Community Action and Social Change (CASC).
Is there a public health minor?
No, we currently do not have a minor in Public Health. However, you are free to take as many undergraduate courses in public health as you would like, even if your major is not public health.
Can I take undergraduate courses in the School of Public Health even if I'm not a public health major?
Yes! We welcome students from across campus to take our undergraduate classes.
Can students in this program study abroad?
Yes, students may study abroad but must do so in the spring/summer terms. Visit our study abroad page for more information and resources.
