Olga Yakusheva

Olga Yakusheva, PhD, MSE

  • Professor, Health Management and Policy
  • Professor, Systems Populations and Leadership, School of Nursing

Dr. Yakusheva is an economist with research interests in health economics and health services research. Her area of expertise is econometric methods for causal inference, data architecture, and secondary analyses of big data.

The primary focus of Dr. Yakusheva's research is the study the work of nurses. She is a nationally-recognized leading expert in linking individual clinicians' and individual patients' data from hospitals' electronic clinical, operational, and human resource databases. Using natural experiments and other quasi-experimental econometric approaches and individually linked clinician-patient data, Dr. Yakusheva has examined health spillovers among hospitalized patients, the role of education for nurse performance, the link between patient's hospitalization outcomes and the nurses assigned to the patient's care, and other aspects of the quality of nursing care and patient outcomes. Original data for these projects have come from Dr. Yakusheva's unique partnerships with over 100 hospitals in the US and internationally.

Currently, Dr. Yakusheva is a Principal Investigator on 5-year federally-funded study to improve the process of assigning clinicians (nurses, physicians, and others) to patients in intensive care units and a 3-year project to examine the effect of specialty nurse certifications on patient outcomes. Dr. Yakusheva has devoted a large part of her research to examining the value of nurse labor to patients and hospitals and nurse compensation in value-based care. She is a lead author of a 6-part series on value-informed nursing practice recently published in Nursing Outlook. Dr. Yakusheva is an associate editor of the International Journal of Nursing Studies, the top nursing journal in the US and internationally.
