Phil Hartley
Phil Hartley, MS ’22, was diagnosed with an idiopathic disease at a young age, so the importance of quality health care has always been a big part of his life. His condition—an idiopathic disease is a disease of uncertain or unknown origin—and the challenges he anticipated facing motivated him from an early age to think deeply about how to live a full life and make a positive impact on others.
Sasha Tretyakova
While interning at the Washtenaw County Health Department, Sasha Tretyakova conducted survey research to determine who in the county is most prepared for an emergency. Tretyakova, who was awarded School of Public Health Student Leader of the Year for 2022, is interested in how these results are used.
Makala Conner
Makala Conner, a master’s candidate in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education at the University of Michigan School of Public Health from Detroit, hopes to one day influence the health of marginalized populations domestically and globally.

Growing up, Nina Masters, MPH ’18, PhD ’21, loved problem solving when it came to infectious disease transmission. Now, she has her dream job as an epidemic intelligence service officer in the Viral Vaccine Preventable Diseases Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
