  • Only faculty, staff and students authorized to work/teach/learn onsite should regularly be in the buildings. These restrictions are needed in order to ensure we stay within building capacity limits.
  • You should familiarize yourself with the self-screening and have a plan for accessing it each day that you come to SPH. So bookmark the website now, and/or add a daily calendar reminder because ...
  • Performing the screening is a necessity no matter your location: whether you are present in-person, or working or studying from home. 
  • Those working in U‑M buildings or facilities are required to use ResponsiBLUE to meet state regulatory requirements.
  • ResponsiBLUE enables you to assess if you are at‑risk and connects you to relevant university resources if needed. The tool will be enhanced over time to include additional features that assist the community in making health‑informed choices that help keep our community as safe as possible during the pandemic.

Below are the university's guidelines relative to fire safety, severe weather, active shooter, and medical emergencies, along with additional emergency preparedness resources. Please review and become familiar with specific emergency preparedness and response practices and procedures within your unit as appropriate. Fire Safety

Your top priority is your own safety. Take action to secure your own safety before you consider assisting others. Any decision to assist others is yours alone, and you are never required to do so. However, do not obstruct others as they evacuate the building. 

  • If you see or smell smoke or fire, activate the fire alarm, evacuate the building, and call 911 from a safe location.
  • Notify building administrator Jim Kennedy, 734-936-6803.
  • Familiarize yourself with locations of fire alarm pull stations, fire extinguishers, stairways and emergency exits in your building(s). Always identify two means of safe egress from your location.
  • If the building's fire alarm sounds, immediately evacuate via the nearest exit, encouraging those around you to evacuate as well.
  • Fire alarm activations require "full" evacuation of all affected buildings.
  • Evacuate through the nearest available exit. Please do NOT exit and congregate in front of the SPH buildings on Washington Heights. In the event of an emergency, fire and police vehicles and personnel will need full access via those entrances, and people congregating there will be in danger. Please move to one of the nearby parking lots, dorm courtyards, or another safe location. 
  • Use stairs, not elevators.
  • If you can do so safely, assist those with disabilities or special needs.
  • Stay clear of building exits and fire lanes.
  • Re-enter only when directed by authorities.

  • Do NOT pull the fire alarm. You do not want people to exit the building!
  • Close all doors, including main corridors.
  • Move to the lowest interior space of the building (hallway, basement, restroom).
  • Stay away from windows and glass or objects that could become projectiles.
  • Crouch near the floor or under heavy, well-supported objects such as desks, and cover the back of your head.
  • Monitor local media outlets for updates and all-clear.

Active Shooter

Your top priority is your own safety. Take action to secure your own safety before you consider assisting others. Any decision to assist others is yours alone, and you are never required to do so. However, do not obstruct others as they seek safety. 

  • Call 911 if you can do so without being overheard by the shooter.
  • Run, if you can do so without encountering the shooter.  
    • Evacuate via a safe route to remove yourself from the threat.
    • Encourage others to leave, but don't slow down your escape.
    • Prevent others from walking into the danger zone.
  • Hide,  if not safe to run
    • Seek a safe location where you cannot be seen or heard
    • Secure the area by locking or barricading door
    • Turn off the lights
    • Silence phones and electronic devices
    • Remain quiet and still
  • Fight, as a last resort. If you cannot run or hide and you must confront the shooter, fight back. You may save your own life.
    • Use the element of surprise, if possible - for example, if you think the shooter may enter through a door that you cannot lock, hide behind the door with a heavy object, then strike fast and decisively, and keep at it until the shooter is incapacitated.
    • Distract, disorient, and disarm the shooter. 
    • Fight as a team if there are others with you. Gang up on the shooter, and attack until he is incapacitated.
    • Use improvised weapons - such as a fire extinguisher, laptop computer, tools (hammer, screwdriver), heavy coffee mug, a chair or small table, heavy desk phone, metal trash can with sharp edges. Do not worry about damaging equipment or furniture. You are trying to save your life! Choose items that can injure and incapacitate from the first blow, if possible. Your goal IS to incapacitate the shooter, which requires injuring him. To save your life, you must be decisive and aggressive, and not worry about the level of harm you inflict on the shooter. 
    • Fight to incapacitate the shooter. Fight to survive.

Medical  Emergencies

  • Call 911.
  • Notify building administrator Jim Kennedy, 734-936-6803.
  • If you are trained, administer first aid/CPR/automated external defibrillator (AED) as appropriate.
  • Keep people clear of the area where the emergency has occurred.
  • Meet the first responders and direct them to the incident location.
  • Remove yourself from the immediate area, so you will not be in the way as the emergency team works.

Building Incident Response Team (BIRT)

During fire or other emergencies, you will see SPH staff members wearing bright orange vests. These individuals have been trained to assist the SPH community in the event of an emergency. PLEASE follow the directions you receive from these individuals, even if they are not your supervisor or would not normally give you orders. It is very important to have orderly evacuation or sheltering in the case of a fire, weather, or other emergency. The best way you can assist the SPH community and the BIRT team is to follow their guidance.

Please DO NOT approach emergency responders or the building administrator or anyone who is assisting in managing the emergency. DO approach the BIRT team with any relevant information, questions, or concerns you may have, and the BIRT team members will relay your message appropriately.

The beautiful, state-of-the-art U-M SPH Crossroads and "Tower" houses more than 8,000 square feet of classroom space, 17 conference rooms, and 133 laboratory benches. It features numerous common spaces designed to facilitate collaboration in interdisciplinary centers and with the school's wide array of community and academic partners.

The seven-story, 125,000-square-foot facility integrates with two other SPH buildings, creating a self-contained complex that houses the school's varied research, teaching, and service programs.

Both a literal and metaphorical crossroads, the U-M SPH building stands just a short campus walk from U-M's schools of medicine, business, public policy, law, nursing, natural resources, and social work.

The innovative design and cutting-edge technology of the new and renovated SPH facilities better enable faculty and students to address top public health priorities, including new genetic technologies, the financing of health care, the globalization of health, public health preparedness, and the prevention and treatment of infectious disease.

The Community Room is a centerpiece for public meetings and mid-size to large gatherings at the School. Tables and chairs can be rearranged to host various kinds of gatherings, and there is a large, ceiling-mounted projection screen and projector for presentations. A catering kitchen is connected to the room for special events. The Community Room is also home to the James Walgreen Létourneau organ, which is used for recitals and special events.


The first digit of any room number indicates the floor on which that room is located. The second digit indicates the hallway in which the room is located:

Rooms in SPH I have second digits of 6 through 8

  • 6 is the Crossroads Tower and SPH I atrium area
  • 7 is the west hallway bordering Observatory Street.
  • 8 is the north wing, which includes the dean’s suite on the first floor.

Rooms in SPH II have second digits of 0 through 5

  • 0 is the north side, bordering Washington Heights.
  • 1 is the south side, nearest the cemetery parking lot.
  • 2 is the west side, nearest the Kinesiology building.
  • 3 and 4 are internal, north-south hallways (some SPH II floors do not have internal hallways)
  • 5 is the east side, nearest the Markley parking lot.

Each of the six academic departments is housed within the SPH buildings. While some offices are located throughout the buildings, the departments are headquartered as follows:

In addition to the departments, the school houses 34 research centers that focus on key issues in public health, both nationally and globally, such as chronic disease, healthy environments, genetics and genomics, childhood obesity, kidney disease, sexuality, leadership, healthcare policy, and more.

There are four gender neutral restrooms at the School of Public Health -- three in SPH I and one in SPH II.

G827T and G829T (SPH I)

  • Option I:
    • Take the elevator by JavaBlu Cafe down to level G
    • Turn left off the elevator and go up the slight incline
    • Turn left at the end of the hallway → both restrooms are on the left
  • Option 2:
    • Coming from JavaBlu Cafe: Go outside through the Courtyard and re-enter the building near the entrance to Nutritional Sciences.
    • Take the elevator near the entrance to Nutritional Sciences to level G
    • Restrooms are immediately off the elevator to the left on the left

B857T (SPH I)

  • Option I:
    • Take the elevator by JavaBlu Cafe down to level G
    • Turn left off the elevator and go up the slight incline

    • Turn right → restroom is on your right
  • Option 2:

M3237 (SPH II)

  • Enter the SPH II lobby from the outside and go through the set of doors to the right
  • Go straight and take the elevator on the left up to level 3
  • Restrooms are immediately off the elevator to the left on the left

SPH has a quiet room, M1157 SPH II, available for test taking (proctored exams), students registered with Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) who need accommodations, or those needing a private space for a phone/Skype interview. The room hosts: a large computer screen, voice recognition software, camera, headsets, and a landline. Priority will be given to SSD approved accommodation requests, test takers, interviews, and, if available, those with other needs. M2025 SPH II is available for anyone who wants a quiet place to meditate/pray.

Room 2759 in SPH I and room 6023 in SPH II are private rooms for lactating mothers. Access is available to SPH students, staff, and faculty. Visitors may be granted access by special request.

Lactating mothers should contact Debbie Struhar ( for room access instructions.

Lounges for private study, relaxation and quiet small group interaction are available in various parts of the building. Room 1627 is designated as a student area except when reserved for events. There are small-group alcoves and a large digital signboard that can be used for collaborative work by plugging in a computer.

The Crossroads lounge adjacent to room 2610 is another student study, relaxation, and collaboration area with a plug-and-play digital signboard.

The JavaBlu Café is a popular gathering spot for relaxation, conversation and collaboration.

Floors 3-7 in the Tower each have a public lounge area on the north end of the floor. Microwaves and refrigerators are available for staff, faculty, and student use. Please do your part to keep common areas clean.

The newly renovated Taubman Health Sciences Library serves the University of Michigan Medical School, Schools of Public Health, Nursing, Dentistry, College of Pharmacy and the University of Michigan Health System.
Hours and additional information are available on the library's website.  Public Health research guides are also available online.  *Effective Fall 2018, THSL will no longer display a meeting schedule outside of their rooms.  Instead they will display a QR Code that will take students to their online room schedules.

The facilities team keeps the building clean, safe, and functional.

The two main entrances on Washington Heights and the two entrances on either side of the SPH I courtyard are unlocked during business hours (7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. M-F), but remain locked at all other times. Employees have 24/7 building access through the use of their MCard. Other entrances remain locked at all times, though some may be used to exit the building at any time. Specified exits are for emergencies only, and will trigger an alarm if opened. These doors are clearly marked.

You can help us maintain the security of the building, and your own belongings, by keeping interior doors locked when offices or workspaces are vacant, and by not propping doors or windows open. We encourage you to wear your U-M ID card on a lanyard at all times (lanyards are available at no charge in room 1780). After business hours, the building is reserved for the use of SPH faculty, staff, and students only, and wearing of U-M ID cards is required.
